How do X-rays work?

X-rays are a type of noninvasive imaging used to diagnose, monitor, and treat certain medical conditions. The technology uses digital sensors and low doses of radiation to capture photos of your bones, joints, or internal organs.

X-rays are quick and painless. The Express Urgent Care team performs X-rays onsite, saving patients the hassle of visiting a separate radiology facility.

What types of problems can X-rays diagnose?

The Express Urgent Care team uses X-rays to diagnose various health problems, including:

  • Bone cancer
  • Breast tumors
  • Blocked blood vessels
  • An enlarged heart
  • Conditions affecting the lungs (like pneumonia)
  • Digestive problems
  • Broken bones (fractures)
  • Infections
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis

Sometimes, the team uses X-rays to find items swallowed by infants and children, like paperclips and batteries.

How do I prepare for X-rays?

X-rays don’t require any special preparation. On the day of your appointment, leave your jewelry at home and wear loose, comfortable clothes.

Tell your provider if you have an artificial joint or another type of metal implant, like a pacemaker. These devices can block the X-rays and affect the quality of the images.

Some X-rays require you to take a contrast material or “dye” before undergoing the procedure. The contrast material can be administered in different ways. Your provider may inject the dye directly into a vein, or they may give you a mixture to drink. Both options are safe.

What happens during X-rays?

At Express Urgent Care, X-rays take 20-30 minutes on average.

When you arrive at the office, the team has you change into a hospital gown and sit or lie down on an X-ray table. Your provider tells you how to position your body and puts a special plate with digital sensors or X-ray film above the area of your body being examined, like your knee joint, for example.

After positioning the X-ray plate, your provider asks you to sit or lie very still and leaves the room. Then, they take a series of digital photos with the X-ray machine. It’s crucial to remain very still during your X-rays, as moving around can affect the quality of the images.

When will I know the results of my X-rays?

Digital X-rays develop instantly, so your Express Urgent Care provider views them immediately after taking them. Your provider explains your diagnosis in depth and makes personalized treatment recommendations.
